Spotlight on Aisha Hassan Zubeir – Breaking Barriers Through the Lens

This World Photography Day, SOMWA proudly shines the spotlight on Aisha Hassan Zubeir, a trailblazing young photographer from Mogadishu whose courage and talent continue to inspire.

Aisha has already carved her name in history as the first female photographer of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, breaking through barriers in a field where women have long been underrepresented.

Her passion for photography was inherited from her late father, Hassan Zubeir, a respected cameraman who tragically lost his life in the 2009 Shamo Hotel bombing. Choosing to carry his legacy forward, Aisha embraced the camera not just as a profession, but as a calling—one that comes with both risks and rewards.

Despite the dangers and the weight of societal stigma, Aisha has risen with determination, resilience, and unshakable courage. Her journey is more than a personal achievement—it is a powerful symbol of what Somali women can accomplish when they dare to defy expectations and claim their rightful place in history.

Today, we celebrate Aisha Hassan Zubeir as a beacon behind the lens, a role model for aspiring creatives, and a reminder of the limitless potential of Somali women.
