Garowe, Puntland – June 26, 2025 – An uproar has emerged in Puntland parliament following the controversial dismissal of veteran journalist Suweys from her post at Puntland TV. The station’s director abruptly terminated Suweys, who had served the state broadcaster for over 8 years, via a WhatsApp message — a move widely condemned as illegal and a violation of press freedom.
Suweys claims that her independent media platform, Suweys Media, where she shares reports and interviews, triggered her dismissal. She alleges that Puntland TV General Director Ali Kimiko ordered her to shut down the page or lose her job.
“I have not broken any law to deserve losing my job. The public needs an independent space to express themselves freely,” Suweys stated.
Maryan Seylac, Executive Director of the Somali Media Women Association (SOMWA), criticised the dismissal, saying, “Puntland law only permits termination under three conditions: a final court ruling, one month’s absence without excuse, or a disciplinary committee decision. None of these apply in Suwey’ case. This action is unlawful and an abuse of authority.”
The Puntland Parliament raised the issue in session, with several MPs urging the Minister of Information to reverse the dismissal and issue a public apology. However, Minister Ceydiid Dirir has reportedly ignored the calls.
Suweys says she always works in fear, relying on three male colleagues for daily protection — one to film, another to coordinate interviews, and a third for personal security.
This incident raises serious concerns over media freedom and the safety of journalists in Puntland.
Call to Action:
SOMWA calls on the Puntland government to reinstate journalist Suweys, ensure her safety, and uphold the legal and ethical protections of media professionals. All stakeholders — civil society, lawmakers, and international partners — must act now to defend press freedom and prevent further unlawful dismissals.
