The Somali Media Women Association (SOMWA) participated in the Gender and Human Rights Advisory Council’s 16 Days of Activism Exhibition and meeting, held in Mogadishu and chaired by the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development, with the Canadian Embassy in Somalia and the Swedish Embassy in Somalia serving as co-chairs. The event brought together senior officials from the Federal Government, civil society organisations, international partners, and diplomatic representatives to discuss pressing issues related to gender equality, human rights, and media freedom.
The meeting opened with an exhibition session, where organisations showcased their ongoing initiatives to advance gender justice and protect human rights across Somalia. SOMWA’s delegation, led by Safa Mohamed, SOMWA’s Gender and Communication Officer, actively engaged with participants and distributed copies of the State of Women’s Press Freedom Report and the publication Protecting Women Journalists and Advancing Gender Equality Through Media. These resources highlight the realities facing women journalists and outline key recommendations for strengthening protections and representation within the media sector.
The second session of the meeting featured a structured agenda that included:
- Opening remarks from the Chair and Co-chairs
- Updates from the Ministries of Family and Human Rights Development
- A panel discussion with the National Human Rights Commission followed by an update from NUSOJ
A notable highlight of the session was the participation of the new Canadian Ambassador to Somalia, Hon. Joshua Tabah, who delivered his opening remarks on his first full day of office after presenting his credentials. Ambassador Tabah underscored Canada’s strong and enduring commitment to advancing human rights, promoting gender equality, and supporting those who defend these values in Somalia.
SOMWA’s engagement in this important platform reaffirms its dedication to advocating for the safety, rights, and empowerment of women journalists. The organisation continues to champion gender-sensitive media practices and amplify women’s voices, particularly during the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign and throughout the year.
