The Somali Women Media Association (SOMWA) strongly condemns the brutal assault on journalist Shukri Caabi of Risaala TV, Mogadishu, by officers of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).
Shukri Caabi and her cameraman were covering a demonstration involving families protesting the destruction of their properties by the government. During their reporting, Shukri was attacked by three plainclothes officers, who used a pistol and a strong stick to beat her. Two additional officers arrived by car and joined the assault, resulting in five male officers violently attacking one female journalist. Shukri sustained visible bruises from the attack.
The officers also assaulted her cameraman and confiscated their equipment, obstructing their ability to carry out their professional duties.
Speaking to SOMWA, Shukri recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “The officers who were supposed to protect me and ensure my safety instead assaulted me. They did not respect me as a woman, a journalist, or someone working for her people.” She called for justice and accountability for the officers involved in this inhumane treatment.
Maryan Seylac, Executive Director of SOMWA, expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, “Seeing such horrific images of a female journalist is heartbreaking. We call on the government, particularly NISA, to launch an immediate investigation into this incident and ensure those responsible are brought to justice without delay.” SOMWA will give Shukri all the support she needs and will not rest until justice is served, added Seylac.
Shukri stated that she recorded the incident while they were beating her and now has their images, and she added that the officers know that she holds theirs and are looking for her. She added, ”I am now hiding for my life and can’t work. First, I am scared that they will come to my workplace and take me away, and secondly, I feel extreme pain in my head and my right hand because of the pistol they hit me with.”
SOMWA emphasises that attacks against journalists undermine press freedom and the safety of media professionals, especially women. We urge the Somali government to uphold its commitment to protecting journalists and safeguarding their rights as they work to serve the public interest.
SOMWA stands in solidarity with Shukri Caabi and all journalists who face risks while performing their duties. We demand swift action to prevent such incidents from recurring and to ensure justice for the victims.
