Jubaland police announce the arrest of the suspected police officer in the killing of journalist Abshir Khalif Shidane.

The Jubaland Police spokesperson, Captain Shukri Farah Duale, confirmed that an argument reportedly occurred between Shidane and the suspect prior to the shooting. According to the spokesperson, Shidane was shot on the left side of his chest, with the bullet passing through his lungs and damaging his heart, resulting in his death.

Abshir Khalif Shidane was widely known for his dedicated journalistic work. Throughout his career, he worked with several media outlets, including Jubaland TV and Radio Waamo, and he was also recognised for his work as a photographer. His death has sent shockwaves through the Somali media community.

While the arrest of the suspect marks an important step by the Jubaland authorities, the Somali Media Women Association (SOMWA) reiterates its call for a thorough, transparent investigation and full accountability. Justice must be delivered for Shidane’s family, colleagues, and the broader media fraternity.

Somali media professionals have extended their condolences to Shidane’s family and coworkers.

“My heartfelt condolences go to Shidane’s family. We will greatly miss him. The Shidane family must receive all the support they need, and justice must be served,” said Maryan Seylac, executive director of SOMWA.

Shidane’s killing marks the first reported killing of a journalist in Somalia this year, underscoring ongoing concerns about the safety and protection of media professionals.
