KISMAYO, Somalia – Journalist Abshir Khaliif Shide was killed today in the city of Kismayo following a dispute between Shide and a member of security forces. The incident occurred at the Qacle intersection, a busy area within the city. Initial reports indicate an argument between Shide and a security force member, leading to Shide’s fatal shooting.
The incident’s circumstances remain unclear. The killing has sparked outrage among media professionals and press freedom advocates, who are calling for accountability and urgent action. Deputy Executive Director Sowda Husein strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a tragic and unacceptable loss.
“We strongly condemn the killing of journalist Abshir Khaliif Shide. This senseless act is a grave attack on press freedom and the safety of journalists who risk their lives to inform the public. We demand an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
She further urged authorities to take concrete measures to guarantee the safety and protection of journalists working in Kismayo and across Somalia.
