Somali Media Women Association (SOMWA) is proud to announce that we have been awarded a grant within Women’s Economic and Social Empowerment – Making a difference: Bilan Media / Somali Women Media Project (SWoMP) by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the European Union.
Building on Bilan Media — Somalia’s first all-women newsroom — role model for women journalists, SOMWA will ver the coming months:
Map Somali women journalists nationwide — identifying and connecting with women working in media across Banadir, Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Jubaland, Puntland, and South West State.
Launch a National Database — a first-of-its-kind, secure platform connecting women journalists with media houses, partners, and opportunities across the country.
Commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists on 2 November, with a formal advocacy statement pushing for stronger legal protection.
Host a National Hybrid Event bringing women journalists from every corner of Somalia together — in person and online — to connect, learn, and be heard.
It’s a step toward a Somalia where every woman with a story to tell has the visibility, safety, and support to tell it.
Stay with us as we roll this out over the coming months — follow SOMWA for updates, milestones, and stories from the field.
SOMWA. Women Empowering.
